I'm working on a test environment for testing Mac software. The plan is to use virtual machines (for example VMWare or Parallels) and install older versions as guest operating system, allowing me to test the software on older versions of OS X as well.

The one problem I have is that neither VMWare nor Parallels seem to work with multiple displays on a OS X Guest (I know they both work with Windows guests).

Is anyone using OS X as guest system, with multiple display support. If so, what is the visualization product and/or workaround?

  • I presume Mission Control and Stage Manager are not the virtual displays you want your guest macOS to run. What does “multiple display support” mean in descriptive terms?

Parallels

There is currently no support for multiple displays in full screen in macOS virtual machines.

VMWare

Use All Displays in Full Screen is not supported for Mac OS X guests.

Given how long this has not been supported by both Parallels and VMWare, I can only conclude this is likely Apple's fault for not providing whatever Parallels or VMWare need to implement this feature. Neither Windows nor Linux virtual machines have this limitation.

Possible workaround

This is not something I tested, only theorize. First, install BetterDisplay in the macOS guest, and use it to create a virtual monitor. Then, use Apple Remote Desktop, Apple screen sharing, or a third-party VNC software, and remote into the macOS guest from your macOS host.
