MacBook Pro Retina 13": change resolution to 1920x1200 pixels
I run a 2018 MacBook Pro at native resolution and I haven't noticed any problems with heat (ambient temperature typically < 30C). I suspect the GPU still does most of the work to scale to Retina even with the lower resolutions selected.

For me (Mojave) scrutil s does not work - it changes the resolution for a second then immediately changes it back. However, scrutil t width height does work for me.
