What environment variables are set in .profile for OS X?
Most of environment variables are not set by .profile. By default, that file does not even exist. Whatever problem you have, it is not because you have overwritten your .profile.

@Jeff You're confusing maximize and zoom. OS X has never had maximize, but some apps define zoom to be maximize.

Terminal does know your directory. The shell reports to Apple Terminal whenever directory changes; the code that enables this is in /etc/bashrc.
