In macOS Sierra you can use Siri to help with this. Invoke Siri with whichever keyboard shortcut you choose from System Preferences >> Siri::Keyboard Shortcut, for example Option+Spacebar
...then say "Turn on the Keyboard Viewer"
...and voila:
