Jun 11, 2017 at 11:10 comment added user240852 Thanks @klanomath for helping & offering to do a "remote desktop session". I see you've helped a lot of people with hard drive problems & I wonder if you could please read my comments below Allan's answer & tell me if you think it would still be helpful to do that, or if you think it's time for me to replace the hard drive? Or is it something you can still maybe fix?

Jun 9, 2017 at 23:46 comment added Monomeeth I've just added an answer. Otherwise, in case you need some reassurance, what @klanomath is suggesting above is not dodgy. But, if you'd prefer to try my answer first, and it doesn't work, then I'd take Klanomath up on his offer. He has helped a lot of people with potential HD problems, which is what I'm starting to suspect in your case.

Jun 9, 2017 at 22:46 comment added klanomath @user240852 Would you mind creating a new admin (with an easy password), installing TeamViewer onto the MPB, booting the iMac to the MPB (in target disk mode like you did previously) and let me have look at the internal hdd of the iMac via a remote desktop session?
Jun 9, 2017 at 22:25 comment added user240852 @klanomath After Apple's announcements last week I was thinking about trying to sell it. I wanted to get it ready in case people came to look at it, and so it would be easier to quickly log out of iCloud et al if it sold. Now I can't even use it. :(
Jun 9, 2017 at 22:20 comment added user240852 Yes @JMY1000 this iMac has a AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB GPU. The screen doesn't display any strange signs of GPU trouble. I regularly do video editing and photoshopping with no sign of trouble.
Jun 9, 2017 at 22:20 comment added klanomath @user240852 Why did you delete the previous Sierra installation?
Jun 9, 2017 at 22:18 comment added user240852 Thanks @klanomath for helping. No, no new customizations. The only thing different from when I installed macOS Sierra the very first time 6+ weeks ago is that I'm not using the same keyboard. My HD is the same 1TB model it originally came with, so it is a little old now, but no signs of HD problems.
Jun 9, 2017 at 16:29 comment added JMY1000 Is it the model with a 6970M? Those were partially recalled for GPU issues. The errors your getting aren't particularly indicative of a GPU issues, but it's possible.
Jun 9, 2017 at 14:02 comment added klanomath @user240852 Any hardware customizations like a new HDD/SSD?
Jun 9, 2017 at 9:59 comment added user240852 If by 'reset' you mean erase, then yes, I secure erased it two days ago.
Jun 9, 2017 at 8:55 comment added Harcker Have you tried to reset the harddisk in your iMac?
Jun 9, 2017 at 7:09 comment added user240852 Thanks @JMY1000 for helping. The iMac in question is a mid-2011 27" model. I just tested it by putting a 2012 MBP in target disk mode and booting it from that. It booted fine and seems to run fine. The MBP also has macOS Sierra installed. What does this tell us?
Jun 9, 2017 at 4:55 comment added JMY1000 Does the installer give the same error when attempting to install to an external HDD? Since you've got access to another Mac, does the iMac boot successfully if you create an external bootable volume and boot from that? What model iMac do you have?
