Michael DiStefano

Hi, I'm Michael. I studied Computer Science with an emphasis in Informatics and have been working as a software engineer professionally for over seven years (not counting university). My primary experience is in iOS development, which I started in the pre-ARC days. I've watched and participated in the platform's evolution but will always have a soft-spot for Objective-C.

I also love working in Python and have built a full-stack investment tracking platform from scratch myself.

Over the years I've worked at places like Uber and Medium as well as mid-sized startups like Simple and smaller ones like Spire. I've also started a few companies myself, one of which was VC backed. In what feels like a separate life I had a Kickstarter project for a physical device I made for steeping tea.

In the stable/volatile engineering distinction I lean towards the former and I value quality in my work. I approach engineering from a "what problem are we trying to solve here?" standpoint and am always looking for the most elegant solution to any given problem. I have taught iOS development through a mentorship platform as well as on the job and really enjoy sharing knowledge as well as thinking through problems together.

I love languages and speak Japanese in addition to my native English. Next up is either Mandarin or picking up the pieces of my high-school Italian.

I have a dog named Eleanor and a soon-to-be wife and we live together in a lovely part of San Francisco where we take Eleanor out for hikes daily.
