On older OS X, you could see and disable this autocorrection, but now the interface is similar but you have to add this entry to manage it. Make three periods generate three periods. Also look for app settings like smart quotes and dashes. Those can really be bad when writing code. The official term for this is “Create text replacements” and you have to add ...

It is a system-wide feature for text input, I guess it comes for free in Cocoa, maybe someone knows better. To disable it right click in a text box (or open the Edit menu) and go to Substitutions and disable Smart Dashes (the dashes features also transforms -- to an en dash —.) You can also enable the Substitutions window from there if you need to toggle ...

There isn't a csrutil command in macOS 10.7. System Integrity Protection (SIP) was introduced in macOS 10.11, and the csrutil command is for modifying SIP. More at OSXDaily about SIP in macOS 10.11 and later.

There is software on the logic board which is referred to as firmware. This is the software that first executes when a Mac starts up. The firmware is capable of reading partitions using various formats such as JHFS+. When Apple introduced the APFS format, Apple only provided firmware updates for certain Mac models. Older Macs can not boot from APFS formatted ...

It is possible to rename spaces using an app called Spaces Renamer. It is available on GitHub for free. I am unsure if it can change the "default" name of desktops as you requested, but it can customize the name of desktops you already have. Please check the below screenshots for an example. The compressed view after pressing F3 The ...

Move the mouse to the corner of the window where it becomes a resizing arrow and option double-click to fill the screen. A double-click on any side or corner will move that side/corner to the edge of the screen. Adding option will affect the opposite side as well.

I moved all hidden (.prefixed) files into a new directory that was not hidden, then transferred them all via airdrop. All hidden files nested in the top directory were successfully transferred.

With macOS Catalina you can do this with shortcut keys Here’s how: Go to System Preferences → Keyboard → Shortcuts → App Shortcuts Hit the plus button and add the Menu Title exactly as it appears along with whichever shortcuts you want: Tile Window to Left of Screen and Tile Window to Right of Screen (fullscreen two windows side by side as a “space”)...

I was directed here when asked the same question to google in 2020. The solution in Catalina is to hold Option when hovering on the green windows button. You'll be able to choose which half of the screen to bound the window.

Came across a slightly different use case that I thought I should share for others: A font file that I bought and downloaded is restricted to app use only. I usually use FontBook, like the accepted answer, to grab the PostScript name. However, because of the app use restriction I was unable to import the font into FontBook. What worked for me was to right ...

Your Mac is not compatible. The Mac Pro 1,1 was released in 2006. Yosemite requires the Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) or later. Unfortunately, you are at the latest version of OS X that your Mac will support. See EveryMac.com for full details: This system can run the last version of OS X 10.7 "Lion" if upgraded to at least 2 GB of RAM. However, although it has a ...

The clock may have been reset. Setting the clock may resolve this problem. Enter recovery mode. Select Utilites in the menu bar. Open the Terminal. Type: date {month}{day}{hour}{minute}{year}, e.g. date 0804221520 for August 4 2020, 22:15. Try running the installation again. It should now proceed in less than a minute. To attempt to back it up you could try starting in Target Disk mode & connect it to another Mac. It is potentially safe - as you've checked the disk already with no errors - to simply overlay a new OS on top of the existing one without disturbing any other data. Run 'Install macOS' from the Recovery partition.

The easiest way to have the Finder refresh its listing is to enter a subfolder and click the back arrow to come back to the original folder. You can also click the back arrow to go to the previous folder, and then the forward arrow. The other way is to use an Applescript as suggested in Daniel's answer. Using osascript, this command can be copy/pasted ...

Question is a bit old but apparently still an issue since it caused me quite a bit of frustration until I figured out the following which works reliably. TDM always starts out at 100% brightness ...
