Launchpad is a feature introduced in Mac OS X Lion based on the iOS springboard. A collection of application icons and folders is accessed either by clicking an icon in the dock or by pressing a specific key on newer Macs/Apple Keyboards. Applications can be launched with a click.

Launchpad looks for applications in at least two different locations: the Applications folder in your Home directory, and the "root" Applications folder sitting in "Macintosh HD." … If it sees an application in more than one place, it puts an icon on the Launchpad for each place it's in. Note that Launchpad folders are entirely independent from the /Applications hierarchy: creating a folder in Launchpad won't create a folder in /Applications, for example. … Finally, you hint at having problems with having Launchpad duplicates. …
