Earphones come as standard with any iPod, iPad and iPhone. They are used to listen to audio on the device. Some are equiped with a remote and microphone which can be used to control the music app. The microphone is used for both the Voice control and Siri functions as well as phone and voicemail

You could try the Mimi Music app, which has that feature. The App Store page lists iOS 9 as the minimum requirement, so there's a good chance it will run.
