  • Do you mean home directory? Why would you want git in your root? What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

If you are using Catalina or a newer version of macOS, then the answer is you can not use git in the Mac's root directory. The reason is simple: the root directory is read only. In other words, you can not create the hidden \.git directory. Jan 24 at 1:47
  • In case you want to use Git to manage your shell profiles etc, see softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/342984/…, digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/… and similar pages.
