I like using my MBP function keys as regular function keys whenever I work on the go (I need my function keys). However, when an external keyboard is plugged in, I want to make the special functions the default.

I know how to map the Function Keys differently for my external keyboard than my internal keyboard (and there are plenty of answered questions on this topic).

But I don't know how to automatically flip their fn behaviour when the keyboard is unplugged.

Does anyone have a solution?

That is:

When an external keyboard is plugged in (say), F2 on the built-in keyboard increases brightness; when there is no external keyboard, Fn+F2 increases the brightness.

Karabiner doesn't help - because (a) I can't switch profiles automatically, and (b) as far as I can tell, the mapping of function keys is independent of the profile.
