I have a Samba network share where I want to add/modify tags on files. This works just fine on macOS. And in the Files.app on iOS & iPadOS, I can see the tags I have applied on Mac when I connect to the server, select a file (long press), click "Share", and select "Add Tags".
However, no matter what I do (add a tag or remove existing one), it does not change the tags. When I go on "Add Tags" again, the same selection of tags is there (and checking on Mac confirms nothing changed).
On local storage and on iCloud Drive long-pressing a file in Files.app shows a "Tags" entry directly, and here tag manipulation actually works.
Is this (i.e. listing tags works, writing does not) a general/known issue with tagging on network shares?
Is there another way/app to tag files on Samba shares that works on iPad, and will have those tags show up on macOS? (Because my fallback is: renaming files on iPad to indicate tags & using a script on macOS to apply those tags ... but that seems ... hack-y.)
In case it helps, my
smb.conf looks like this:
[global] log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m logging = file map to guest = Bad User max log size = 1000 obey pam restrictions = Yes pam password change = Yes panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d passwd chat = *Enter\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* . passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u server role = standalone server server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu) unix password sync = Yes usershare allow guests = Yes fruit:encoding = native idmap config * : backend = tdb vfs objects = fruit streams_xattr [public] path = /mnt/ssd read only = No
