On my Mac, In the Console, there is an excessive amount of logging from the 'mds' process.

mds is the service that runs Spotlight. It is also integral to Time Machine, apparently.

Small sample (In the last 8 minutes, over 240,000 messages have been logged):

You can see from the timestamps that these are occurring frequently (every 0.001 or so).

Note: I enabled Private Data in the Console using the instructions here: https://superuser.com/a/1532052/1247878 .

This issue this is causing me (other than being unsightly) is that a diagnostic tool for my VPN wants to collect Console logs over the past day, and the report file it's generating grows to double-digit GB sizes, making it nearly impossible to submit to the network team for troubleshooting.

Is there any way to reduce mds' logging level? I could turn off the indexing, but then that would affect Time Machine.

  • Is MDS going nuts (using lots of RAM or CPU)? see rawinfopages.com/mac/content/… for how to fix that..

  • Not too crazy. But I do know how to stop MDS (or at least, pause it for a while). As a stop gap, I ran without Spotlight and Time Machine for a day, and cleared all logs so I could get a cleaner diagnostic report. The logging is still unsightly though.
