Suppose I delete a photo from the iOS Photos app, and then delete it from recently deleted. I understand that this "throws away" the key for decrypting the photo's data. But what about the photo's metadata? Is this encrypted? If so, is the key for this encrypted metadata also thrown away when the original file is deleted?

  • I do believe that all meta-data is stored in the actual picture file. It is called EXIF data and there are editors and viewers available for the Mac, not the least of which is the Preview App on all Macs. There may be some data specific to iOS/macOS that is stored externally to the picture but most is that EXIF data. – Steve Chambers Dec 22 '20 at 18:55
