In the "Proxies" tab of the Network system preference, there's a field to bypass proxies for some hosts ("Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains:"). By appearances, it's a comma separated list of IP addresses and hostnames, but what's the general format? What types of addresses can be entered? More specifically:

  • Does this setting accept only IP addresses and domain names, or does it also accept subnets?
  • If subnets, what formats? Does it accept CIDR notation? If so, do all four quads need to be entered, or can quads that are part of the host ID be left off (e.g "192.168/16")?
  • Can it take address ranges?
  • Can it take any other types of data?
