I am trying to partition my Mac HDD but the entire HDD has one partition and according to Disk utility the full 1TB is taken up by the OS X Base System. I’ve tried creating more partitions, but it won’t let me (it's effectively locked as read only).

How can I get around this so my Mac can utilise the HDD properly?

  • Can you please give us an idea of what you are trying to accomplish? Are you trying to partition your main hard disk? It is very difficult for anyone to help without a clear objective. – wjid Aug 19 at 18:26
  • Also, what led to this situation? "OS X Base System" is usually the name of part of an installer (or Recovery system) for OS X, not the actual installed system. BTW, having the physical device listed as non-writable appears to be normal, though I'm not sure why it shows up that way. – Gordon Davisson Aug 20 at 5:48
  • My significant other’s boss had and they asked me to fix it and I said I could try but never have came across this issue. How would I go about fixing it? – Malo Skylar Aug 20 at 11:48
