I've read recommendations in many places to enable logging for the
distnoted process by creating
/var/log/do_dnserver_log (such as in this answer from 2013, this posting from 2008, this tech note last updated in 2010). I have created this file, loosened the permissions, changed file ownership, rebooted, etc., but I see no log messages in the file:
MyMac:~ me$ ls -l /var/log ... -rw-rw-rw- 1 daemon daemon 0 Jul 23 11:36 dnserver.log -rw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 0 Jun 14 16:50 do_dnserver_log ...
All of the posts I've seen recommending to do this are quite old. I am wondering if the advice is obsolete. I am running MacOS 10.13.6 (17G7024) (High Sierra).
I'm having problems with the distnoted process constantly using ~95%+ CPU, and often spiking to much higher than that and causing the fan to spin up loudly. I am trying to figure out what is causing this activity and how I can reduce it.
