I have lots of 4k videos that I took on my GoPro recently. They play perfectly on the GoPro itself and on my iPhone 7. But, when I downloaded them to my laptop via SD card and play them using Quicktime or VLC, they are very choppy.

I tried downgrading the video quality to 1080p using some free online tool, but the result was very blurry. I would like to retain the 4k definition if possible.

I've also tried connecting my laptop to a 4k television via HDMI, but the videos were still choppy.

My laptop is a 2015 Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 8GB RAM, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, and 250GB SSD.

Any idea how I can resolve this?

  • If you open one video in QuickTime - what is the encoding scheme, resolution, bitrate, and other things that might impact playback. – bmike Jun 2 at 21:11
  • How can I see that information for my video? I don't see it when I right-click the file in Finder and select "Get Info". And if I can see that info, is there a way for me to alter those values for optimal playback? – Spencer Goff Jun 3 at 3:59
