I have an old Mac mini 2006 running Mac OS X 10.6, with an external HDD with a collection of videos and a 4th generation Apple TV.

The old Mac mini is not powerful enough to decode 1080p content with an acceptable frame rate, but the Apple TV is.

When using iTunes with Home Sharing to stream video content to the Apple TV, which is doing the decoding of content? The host Mac, or the client Apple TV?

  • So, added a 1080p sized trailer to iTunes; it plays perfectly using Home Sharing on an Apple TV 3 & 4. I need to test whether the Mac mini can play the same content itself, but it looks like the client does the decoding. – eirvandelden Apr 12 at 8:21
