I recently installed a fresh copy of macOS Mojave, 10.14.3 on my Late 2013 21.5" iMac.

After a couple of days, the shutdown procedure stopped working. What I get, instead, is a black screen with a grey spinning wheel. This is a computer that I've had for years, and just recently has started having this issue.

This is what I have tried to solve the shutdown issue:

Is there anything else I could try? Is reinstalling macOS going to help?

  • Try updating to macOS Mojave 10.14.4 and see if that fixes the issue. – Nimesh Neema Apr 2 at 10:26
  • Hi Nimesh, the problem about updating macOS is that it requires a reboot, which macOS is unable to do. I am kind of stuck on this version unless I can reboot the computer. :( – Pablo Apr 2 at 10:51
  • How about installing the update and see if that enables the computer to shut down/reboot, basically fixes the issue? You can also force shut down and start and see that if it actually resolves the issue. Do note to keep backups while you attempt it. If all fails, a fresh install of 10.14.4 maybe a next go. – Nimesh Neema Apr 2 at 11:06
