I am using a generic wired USB keyboard connected to a MacBook Pro. I'd like to use the function keys on the keyboard to invoke special functions which are labelled on the MacBook's built-in keyboard (such as adjusting MacBook's screen brightness, Mission Control, Launchpad etc.).

I vaguely recall having this ability turned on by default previously. However, I can no longer do the same (possibly some OS updated has broken it).

I am running macOS Mojave 10.14.4 on a late 2013 15" MacBook Pro. I'd prefer to achieve the desired without using any 3rd party tool.

Is there a way to do this? My memory may be failing me, but was this behaviour possible previously?

I have disabled/tried toggling Use F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys under System Preferences → Keyboard → Keyboard.

Pressing the function key(s) on the external keyboard simply sounds a beep.
