In the olden days, I recall using my Mac to reduce the richness of color in an image to reduce its file size and memory usage. I remember switching from millions of colors to thousands of colors.

Is there a way to do this nowadays, perhaps with Preview.app?

I understand Preview can reduce the size of the image (pixels across and down). I am looking to reduce color richness as another way to also reduce file/memory size.

  • I think there are better algorithms these days that don't rely on that technique. I would try jpeg. – historystamp Feb 11 at 3:35
