I don't like the default behavior of the media keys (opening iTunes), so have always disabled it by renaming iTunesHelper.app to something else and removing it from the login items. I can't just delete iTunes as I use it occasionally.

For some reason renaming the helper is no longer sufficient. I have checked to make sure nothing changed in the contents of the iTunes.app bundle during an update.

Has anyone been able to disable iTunesHelper on Mojave?

One solution that hasn't worked: https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/9upv0k/how_to_delete_itunes_on_mojave_cant_use_media/. I've checked to see what the com.apple.iTunesHelper.launcher daemon is calling, and it is indeed using the old path that no longer exists on my computer, so I don't think it can be the problem.
