This is a Finder window's bar. The search field in the top right is about 25% of the width unless I make it quite narrow. Finder window bar

This is a file-picker dialog. The search field is always this tiny, regardless of how wide the window is. File-picker dialog bar

It's really difficult to use at that size - is it possible to change? I've looked through questions regarding file-picker and other window sizes and looked in plist files (such as ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist) but haven't found a likely candidate to help.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

Not an answer but a possible workaround. If your intended target is already open on the desktop, you can drag it into a file picker & the picker will cd there. – Tetsujin Nov 23 '18 at 7:17
