When downloading a YouTube video using youtube-dl, I get the following error:

MacBook-Pro:ytd user$ youtube-dl "https://youtu.be/dgxpBpa9A48"
[youtube] dgxpBpa9A48: Downloading webpage
ERROR: Unable to download webpage: <urlopen error [SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed: unable to get local issuer certificate (_ssl.c:1045)> (caused by URLError(SSLCertVerificationError(1, '[SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed: unable to get local issuer certificate (_ssl.c:1045)')))

What is causing this? How do I overcome it and download the video?

  • See if are able to open that URL in a browser window without getting any error (regarding untrusted connection or certificate). – Nimesh Neema Sep 28 '18 at 19:19
  • What version are you running? Issue the command youbute-dl --version – Allan Sep 28 '18 at 21:11

For some reason youtube-dl has cert issues. I have always found a solution by using --no-check-certificate argument.

From the man page:

--no-check-certificate
              Suppress HTTPS certificate validation

Should really say "Ignores HTTPS certificate validation"...

Any reason to not using 4K Downloader which is awesome and free?https://www.4kdownload.com/products/product-videodownloader

You can also use KeepVid to download without installing anything, just paste the address here: https://keepvid.works/

  • @JBis my answer would be a comment asking for clarification. But guess what? I can't comment. Its clear that I'm a new user, so why everybody is so rude around here? – Mateus Ribeiro Sep 28 '18 at 23:52
  • @MateusRibeiro I have been a new user since not a long time ago (I started on Ask Different only 6 months ago). Can attest that the community is among one of the most welcoming of SE sites, and I can barely remember a bitter experience. From what I learned, what works best is to adhere to the site guidelines. Contributions are always welcome from everyone and community respects it, but expects that it adds value to the site and is made within guidelines. Rushing though to make something happen quickly generally doesn’t work. Good and relevant content trumps everything! Enjoy your stay. :) – Nimesh Neema Sep 29 '18 at 4:09

@MateusRibeiro Regarding the answer, the OP is clearly trying to resolve the issue encountered when running youtube-dl command. There can be n number of alternate tools to accomplish the same task and OP is not asking for alternative. – Nimesh Neema Sep 29 '18 at 4:12
