My 27-inch iMac (late 2013) running in High Sierra has been stuck since this evening.

After booting up, I tried logging in as usual, but it does not let me in. Right after entering the correct password and hitting enter, all I could see is a spinning beach ball along with a white wheel. I waited for hours… but to no avail.

After going through several forums, I tried to start the system in safe mode, but the problem is still the same. Using Cmd + R, I also tried repairing the disk using Disk Utility’s First Aid option but the problem still persists. I have thought to try reinstalling the OS but have not done.

How can I resolve the problem?

  • Do you prefer an operational Mac or finding out what is the cause? If you prefer the former, reinstall. If you wanna get deep in the nitty gritty, boot in verbose mode, and let it freeze. Then reboot into recovery, and i will convert this comment into an answer, and we will begin searching for clues... – Francis from ResponseBase Aug 15 '18 at 18:37
