I created a rule for moving emails from the junk folder in Apple Mail back to the inbox if the sender is in my contacts. The rules works fine when I select all the emails in the Junk folder and select Message > Apply Rules.

Unfortunately, the rule is not applied automatically to newly downloaded emails.

One thing to note is that my email server is classifying emails as spam, moving them into the Junk folder, and marking them as Read before they are downloaded by Apple Mail.

My question is: on which emails does Apple Mail apply rules automatically? Does Apple Mail apply rules automatically at all? Are rules only applied to emails that are unread or that are in the inbox? Or could this just be some kind of hiccup as mentioned here?
