On my Mac, I have local calendars (shown under "On My Mac") and an Exchange account. I'd like to sync both to my iPhone. I can add the Exchange account to the iPhone itself, so I think the only thing iTunes needs to sync is the local calendars. I do not have iCloud calendars enabled.

But in iTunes, when I go to the iPhone's Info view, under Sync Calendars, it says "Your calendars are being synced over the air. You can also choose to sync calendars with this computer. This may result in duplicated data showing on your device."

This is a very confusing message. Does that mean if I turn on Sync Calendars, it will attempt to sync BOTH the local and the Exchange calendars with my Mac? Which calendar accounts are currently being synced over the air?

I have a similar question about contacts here.
