I was looking at some of the built-in keyboard shortcuts in macOS, and some of them are totally incomprehensible to me. I tried to do some research, but couldn't find any useful answers. All of them can be found under this window:

I would like to have, please, an explanation of the following shortcuts:

  1. "Move focus to active or next window". If I have multiple windows running, what's the "active" or "next" one?
  2. "Move focus to the window toolbar". What's the window toolbar?
  3. "Move focus to the floating window". What is the floating window?
  4. "Move focus to next window". What's the next window? And how does this shortcut differs from the first one in this list?
  5. "Move focus to the window drawer". What's the window drawer?
  6. "Move focus to status menus". What are the status menus?

Thank you!

The easiest way to see the behavior is to try the shortcuts. For example, the window toolbar is the top part of the Windows (where the find field is, and possibly other buttons). The floating window might or might not be there, but the help window is a floating window, among others.

Open a few windows and test. Most of them will start to make sense.

  • Thanks for the reply. I did try to test all of those, most of them did not produce any visible result - that's why I came here. – voronoi Mar 24 '18 at 9:53

OK, well, if you open several windows in the finder, you certainly should see different behaviors. But you do have the "turn keyboard access on/off" disabled in the screen shot you posted. If I hit ^F2 the apple in the menu bar is highlighted, and I can use arrows and return to navigate and select a menu item. if I hit ^F3 the dock appears and the first item is selected. Arrow key move to the other items in the dock.^F4 and ⌘` behave very differently, Etc. – lbutlr Mar 26 '18 at 21:53

Thanks, I played around with the shortcuts and indeed I managed to figure out what most of them were meant for. However, others remain a mystery: ⌃F6 and ⌥⌘-backtick seem to do nothing, even with several Finder windows open. Moreover, I take it that the "status menus" mentioned next to ⌃F8 are just a different name to the menubar icons, right? – voronoi Mar 29 '18 at 6:50

I was wondering the same thing until I came across this link: https://flylib.com/books/en/2.963.1.226/1/
