This issue is somewhere stuck between Android Enthusiasts and Ask Different, but seeing as the issue is with the computer itself, I decided it was a better fit here.

I'm a college student studying CS and learning the Android SDK, but for some reason, Google's ADB or Android Debug Bridge software is repeatedly causing kernel panics on my Macbook Pro 2015 running OS X 10.11.6. I could just uninstall it, but I need this program to work and I know that it works for thousands of people without issue.

The phone in question is a Motorola X 2013 Developers Edition running CyanogenMod 12. This issue began before I began using CyanogenMod.

What can I do to fix this? I've been to an Apple store but they could not find the cause of the panics. Things I do know so far include:

  • Is it not caused by avast kext
  • Is is not caused by the splashlab kext
  • It only happens when my phone has been plugged into the computer. If the phone has not been recently connected to the computer, no kernel panics ever occur.
  • It only happens with my Motorola X, but even replacing the firmware did not stop the issue. However, it may be Moore's law and I just got lucky that it didn't occur.
  • I've used different USB cables and different ports with the same result.
  • Before the panic, the computer freezes entirely for about 10 seconds, usually right after coming out of sleep.

I have several more panic logs if they would be helpful and can (kinda) create new ones on demand, but would rather not.

  • Did you try developer.android.com/support.html ? – nohillside Mar 10 '17 at 16:43
  • @patrix just looked through it. Most of the links posted there are outdated or unhelpful – Ethan Z Mar 10 '17 at 22:12

As a test, what happens if you set your MBP to never go to sleep (on either power or battery)? Do you still experience the problem? And, if so, as often as before or less so? Also, just for clarification, are you saying that if you never plug your phone into the MBP that you wouldn't experience this problem? Can you also provide exact details of the model of your phone? And finally, have you tried connecting your phone to a different USB port and have you tried using different cables? – Monomeeth Mar 11 '17 at 7:10
  • @Monomeeth I added the information I know and will test for the rest today. – Ethan Z Mar 11 '17 at 13:00

It's not actually that surprising. Any hardware can cause a kernel panic or other unexpected behaviour if there is some sort of fault or bug at play. That's not to say it's necessarily the fault of the hardware, sometimes it's a software bug interacting with the hardware that's the root cause. Just two days ago I saw a laptop that was connected to a dock undergo a panic and hard shutdown just because one of the displays connected to the dock was unplugged. Go figure. – Monomeeth Mar 15 '17 at 2:04
