Having just upgraded to iOS 9, I've noticed that Reminders is no longer able to take a copied list like this:

My wife emails me our grocery list in this format every week and now I can't use Reminders to check off items as I find them in the store.

How can I ask her to format the list and/or paste it so that each item will be separated as unique items to be checked off one-by-one?

iOS 14

  1. Paste the text into the Notes app,
  2. Select select all lines you want to become items in the Reminders or just Select All
  3. Press the checkbox ☑️ button above the keyboard
  4. Tap the selection
  5. Press the Copy button
  6. Open the Reminders app
  7. Paste into any list

This way the text will be split into separate items for each lines. The Reminders app can't do it by itself, but the Notes app can.

I have tested a list just like you specified on iOS 9.0.1 (13A404) and used the notes app to make a note with the three items, one return, no special characters, spaces or line breaks added between the three items.

I then long pressed and selected all the text in the notes app, copied it, went to reminders and pasted it. Use care to paste into the list itself and not to paste into an empty reminder.

The behavior for me isn't a change as I'm getting multiple list items and not a list of three items.

If the above doesn't help your results, you might need to look in to the specific app that your wife is doing the copy operation to see how she is getting the text and double check exactly where it gets pasted. If it's a long enough list, you might try pasting it into notes.app to see if that helps or use notes.app to make the list in the first place.

The trick for me is to make sure the text field isn't active (keyboard isn't up) when long pressing and pasting otherwise if the text field is active then I don't get three separate items. Commented Sep 29, 2015 at 15:29
  • @SteveMoser Aah - so the pasting of several lines yields one reminder if you are pasting into a reminder, but a list if pasting in to the list itself?

  • Correct, and that is a simpler way to explain it. Commented Sep 29, 2015 at 15:45
  • @SteveMoser Yes, this seems to be this issue. In the previous version, pasting the items within the text field would still automatically split them. Commented Oct 6, 2015 at 17:51
