Set macOS wallpaper to 16without re-bitencoding image

I have a 16 bit PNG that looks great in Preview, but when I set this PNGgradient with the same resolution as my wallpaperscreen, 3072 × 1920, and 16-bit color, which renders without banding appears. I assume this is because of some rewhen viewed full-encoding macOS does beforescreen using itPreview, but becomes banded when set as the desktop wallpaper. How can I fixprevent whatever re-encoding is doing this?

I’ve also tried settingexporting the wallpaper to a 16as an 8-bit TIFFPNG, convertingbut that introduces banding even when viewed in Preview. I’ve also tried the image between sRGBsRBG, “Display P3”Display P3, and “Color LCD”Color LCD color profiles, and using a TIFF, as well as setting the wallpaper usingvia System Settings, the Finder context menu, and the followingan AppleScript: that tells Finder set desktop picture to POSIX file "/example/filename.png".
