Dec 2, 2022 at 17:31 comment added WGroleau The Dock plist is now binary instead of text. But it still contains the path to each item, and not the item's contents. Last time I looked, the path was a filesystem path; now it is a URI with protocol file:// Perhaps the phantom was in some other plist, but there are too many of those to bother looking for it when its already gone. Or perhaps it was actually in the Dock plist even though its path did not exist. I wish I had clicked on it to see what open would do.
Dec 2, 2022 at 17:22 comment added WGroleau I've often inadvertently removed Downloads by dragging it out when I really mean to fan it and remove the latest item (which has its icon showing in Dock). Anyway, reboot made it disappear.

Dec 2, 2022 at 17:07 comment added Tetsujin I have two dividers, I just dragged the thing around for a while & it didn't seem interested - until I tried again right next to the Trash icon, then it expanded welcomingly.
Dec 2, 2022 at 16:04 comment added nohillside @benwiggy Is this an answer to the question, or to Tetsujin's comment beneath the question?
Dec 2, 2022 at 14:50 comment added benwiggy @Tetsujin Files and folders have to be the other side of the dividing line from apps.
Dec 2, 2022 at 14:43 comment added Tetsujin Ahhh… that's why I couldn't get it to work. I tried dragging to everywhere except next to Trash. In my defence, I probably haven't had it there in a decade ;))
