@Jeff RE: "(because AS doesn't work if the ScreenSaver is on)," -- You could try adding tell application "System Events" to stop screen savers as the first line of code in the script.

This is the accepted answer. The script works perfectly, and I appreciate your attention to detail (e.g., making sure the initial conditions are correct and restoring the "Use keyboard navigation" checkbox). I'd rather use the defaults write command (because AS doesn't work if the ScreenSaver is on), but I'd need a way to force the OS to update its cache. Meanwhile, your AS is good. Thank you.
