Mar 29, 2021 at 2:30 | comment | added | user397847 | And now I know it works. If @X_841 (or someone else) doesn't post an answer in a couple of days, I'll self-answer and accept on their behalf. Questions need answers :-)
Mar 26, 2021 at 2:35 | comment | added | user397847 | @X_841: I've ordered a miniDP-DSUB15 converter from Amazon (VGA is unfortunately the only free input on the monitor). You should post your comment as an answer so I can upvote/accept assuming it works. Or disparage you if it doesn't :-)
Mar 24, 2021 at 23:27 | comment | added | user397847 | @Gilby: that's not too bad, the internal screen is only 1440x900 anyway. It'd obviously be nice to have 4K or 8K but that's a bit beyond what I need :-)
Mar 24, 2021 at 21:59 | comment | added | Gilby | Like @X_841says. Amazon have TB2 to VGA cables though you will be limited to1920x1200 resolution at best.
Mar 24, 2021 at 20:48 | comment | added | user397847 | @X_841: the only cable remaining on the monitor is the DSUB15 (VGA) since the HDMI and DVI are both taken. Not the best option in terms of quality but I'll look into it. Thanks.
Mar 24, 2021 at 17:55 | comment | added | X_841 | Have a look at this: apple.stackexchange.com/questions/398384/…. Basically, this doesn't really work, because Thunderbolt is such a complex but powerful connector, adapting version 2 to 3 doesn't work that well. I'd get a simple mini-DP to "whatever input is left on the monitor" and connect like that.

use correct dock info

Mar 24, 2021 at 14:59 | comment | added | user397847 | @Gilby: "Macbook Air (13 inch, 2017)", so I guess it's Thunderbolt 2. And apologies for the misinformation, the dock is HSN-IX02, not HNS-IX05. I've now corrected that in the question and the HP doco is at support.hp.com/au-en/product/hp-thunderbolt-dock/20075223/….
Mar 24, 2021 at 10:50 | comment | added | Gilby | If it is TB2, you can use a miniDP cable to connect directly to a miniDP monitor. See TB2 section of support.apple.com/en-us/HT201736. You can also get a miniDP to HDMI cable - but I don't know of a cable known to work with MBA.
Mar 24, 2021 at 10:32 | comment | added | Gilby | Whats the model. Click on Apple at top left, click on About This Mac, and what does it say in the MacBook... line? This so we can identify the ports you have. MBA 2018 (and later) are Thunderbolt 3, MBA 2017 are Thunderbolt 2. Do you have a web page with spec of your doc? I can't find HNS-IX05.
