Jul 22 at 21:56 comment added Sridhar Sarnobat I was hoping there was a documented reason why it was called "Darwin." It's spectulated that it's related to evolution (which would also explain NeXT). What I find somewhat aesthetically pleasing is that the 3 major systems are called "Linux", "CygWIN" and "DarWIN". When I'm naming my system backups, they neatly line up.

Sep 24, 2020 at 10:09 comment added Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen MacOS is the whole package. Darwin does not have the Aqua GUI so it is plain text or - like most other Unix/Linux variants - an X11 GUI.
Sep 23, 2020 at 18:26 comment added Jörg W Mittag Darwin, however, is an OS, not just a kernel (the kernel is called xnu). Apple used to make it available as a separate OS, complete with binaries, installer, ISOs, etc., but they stopped many years ago.

Sep 23, 2020 at 16:25 comment added slebetman It is for the same reason that Ubuntu OS is often called "Linux" or RaspberryPi OS is called "Linux" - Linux is not an OS. It is a kernel that can be used as the core of your OS. Which is why we call Android an OS even though it uses the Linux kernel
