Oct 27, 2016 at 18:29 comment added elder elder @GordonDavisson Could you please post your suggestion as a response? Although every doc I saw mentioned "aliases" as the go-to for installer DMGs, I see that the finder calls both a symlink and an alias proper by the same name; maybe that's the reason. The fact that my alias was much bigger (~1MB) vs Skype's (merely 13 kB) and using a symlink gets me the same size...was an extra clue. There may be a way yo tell them apart I am not acquainted with. Thank you, everything works now as expected (on both OS flavors).

Oct 27, 2016 at 0:58 comment added tubedogg I don't know that there's anything dangerous about relaunching Finder (although it could cause lost data in certain cases possibly?) but I was speaking more of inconvenience or utter confusion as Finder windows disappear.

Oct 26, 2016 at 22:09 comment added Gordon Davisson It looks like you're using a Finder alias to the Applications, rather than a unix-style symbolic link. Aliases store a lot of info about the original item on the computer it was created on, which sometimes confuses things when they're moved to another computer. Try creating a symlink instead, with something like ln -s /Applications /Volumes/QST-6.5-devel-setup/Applications -- that might be better-behaved.

If I'm missing something downright dangerous, it is because I'm far from a power-user on the Mac; I'm the "port this thing on Mac" guy, really. If you could provide a few reasons, I'd be grateful.
Oct 26, 2016 at 21:09 comment added tubedogg Even if it's possible, relaunching Finder on the user's computer without explicit permission sounds like a Bad Idea™.
