this will probably not work if the Spotlight service has been disabled, for example with sudo mdutil -a -i off (for detailed usage see man mdutil), also mdfind queries the spotlight database which means that the data might not always be in sync with the file system

In 2022 with Big Sur 11.6.2, that file does not appeat to exist: ls /System/Library/CoreBigServices/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/StdExclusions.plist ls: /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/StdExclusions.plist: No such file or directory

I'm not able to exclude /usr/local using tmutil. I get error -50. Any idea what the problem might be?

On my system, mdfind outputs a lot more -- including ~/Applications and ~/Library/Screen Savers. Be careful!
