Sep 19, 2016 at 5:53 comment added tubedogg I don't disagree an SSD may make some noticeable impact, but for the majority of users (OP included, based on the description of their activities), an SSD is not going to resolve general computer slowness. Videos starting and stopping while playing, adjusting the volume being unresponsive, etc. shouldn't be an issue with a 7200 RPM hard drive, all other factors being equal. An SSD might speed up boot time and application launch time, but the totality of the issues are likely CPU-driven.

Sep 19, 2016 at 3:48 comment added Monomeeth To be honest, you could in fact post a totally separate question about the slow response times you're experiencing - as there are so many possible causes and ways to try and address them. In addition to not enough space on your HDD, Spotlight could be indexing your HDD, you may have a memory problem, your desktop has way too many icons, etc. One of the possibilities (heaven forbid) is that your hard drive is failing. Have you got a backup regime in place (Time Machine etc)? Have you run Disk Utility or some other hard drive diagnostic tool?
Sep 19, 2016 at 3:48 comment added Monomeeth I agree - you don't seem to be doing anything that's really processor intensive. How long has the lag been happening? Is it something you started noticing at a certain point (eg. after installing macOS Sierra, after installing extra RAM, etc). I'm also interested in how much free space you have left on your HDD? Also, Is your computer usually left on, or do you shutdown each day?
Sep 19, 2016 at 3:20 comment added Sizzle I use the machine for general personal and business use (documents, web, email, playing music, streaming video) and nothing I would consider too intensive (no video editing or the like). When I describe it lagging and not zippy...start-up takes quite a while, video often starts and stops while playing, applications sometimes take minutes to open, web pages take too long to load, I get lots of spinning beach balls, when I adjust the volume it takes a second before reacting
