@MarkSetchell In a hierarchical folder structure you can easily put that PDF into two folders with a hard link (ln ), or a symbolic link (ln -s ) if the situation calls for it. Tags become more convenient when you want to apply a larger number of categories to a file. (It also depends on whether your categories more naturally form sets or a tree structure.) I am a big fan of tags too, but as researchers Bergman and Whittaker explain in their book The Science of Managing Our Digital Stuff (2016) there are still cognitive benefits to maintaining a minimal hierarchical folder structure.

@patrix Go in Finder->Preferences and select Sidebar and ensure that Tags is ticked at the bottom.
