In Safari 7 and Safari 8, youYou can press cmd-LCVtemporarily display the protocol by activating the address bar with (while holding⌘ Cmd-L and copy-pasting the command key, press L, then C, then V)current URL back to temporarily display the protocol; howeveraddress bar with ⌘ Cmd-C, this⌘ Cmd-V.

The protocol will, however, disappear again as soon as you load a new page by following a link on the page or pressing Enter in the address bar.
