For me (Mojave) scrutil s does not work - it changes the resolution for a second then immediately changes it back. However, scrutil t width height does work for me.

Jan 7, 2019 at 20:09 | comment | added | Dan Pritts | the scrutil binary that leo put up on github is 32-bit, and therefore will not work after MacOS Mojave (10.14). Love to hear about it someone gets a similar utility working in 64-bit mode.

Dec 14, 2014 at 1:54 | comment | added | Ruskes | your are welcome, sorry I could not do more. I assume you tried it in sudo mode.
Dec 14, 2014 at 1:50 | comment | added | Josiah | setgetscreenres works very well in normal mode, unlike screenutil. However, even that doesn't work right in single user mode. It said I couldn't access the WindowServer without logging in, but it wouldn't let me do that. That said, it is a great start, and perhaps in combination with more googling I can find a complete solution. Thanks!

Dec 12, 2014 at 3:31 | comment | added | Josiah | Thanks for the find! However, after trying the utility I found that it doesn't work in single user mode. Trying to use it simply gives me an "invalid display" message.

Dec 8, 2014 at 19:38 | comment | added | Ruskes | sorry for that, I did not check it my self since I do not have your set up.-- a GUI user :)
Dec 8, 2014 at 19:25 | comment | added | Josiah | That definitely looks promising. Unfortunately it seems the site that scrutil was hosted at is now down, and I can't find a place to get it.
