iMessage iChat sends out connections to an IP address when configuring camera and mic settings

Using LittleSnitch I noticed that Messages (iMessageiChat) tries to connect to 17.154.239.222 over udp when I open the audio and video preferences for the application. Apple owns that IP address but does anybody know why it would need to call home?
