Diereses prevent diphthongs; support diacritics awareness

--

Hi. My name is Daniel.

I'm mostly active on Ask Different, where I'm now a moderator◆, but I sometimes visit some other Stack Exchange sites (more to read than anything else).

I first got into computers in 1982, and learned to program on an Apple //+. Switched to Mac in 2003. I'm not a computer pro; it's just a hobby. I hope any of my questions or answers are helpful.

comment How to limit my Mac's exposure to malware?
@Reid If I could think of how to do that, I'd post it as an answer, not a comment. :-)

When you say "alpha-only" characters, you mean [A-Za-z]? No punctuation or anything? Diacritics? Unicode? Just ASCII upper and lower case letters before the @ sign? Curiouser and curiouser.

comment Best practices for mounting Linux filesystems on OS X over the Internet
Now that the question has migrated, I expect you'll get the opposite of "use the command-line or GTFO" -- the command line is a great tool to fall back on when necessary, but Mac users would generally prefer a solution that works in the Finder. I wish I knew one to post as an answer for you, but welcome to the site.

For maximum security, unplug your machine. Machines that are powered down and have no connection to any input devices generally avoid malware. Sadly, anything that can serve as a source of desirable input can also serve as a source of undesirable input. As the answers below correctly observe, there are many practices that improve security, but it's all a trade-off: maximum security is completely unusable, and maximum usability compromises security. What trade-off is right for you may not be the right answer for someone else (which doesn't mean this isn't a good question -- it is).

Hardware recommendations like this are on-topic here; asking "what should I buy" is off-topic, but asking about what products with feature x is on-topic.

comment How can I retrieve files cached in the RAM?
This is a very generic question, and it lends itself to a rather generic description of the tool available. If you have a more specific problem, as you suggest in your comment on the answer by bmike, you might do better asking that question (as in "I am running app X that downloads video files from a server, caches them in memory, and then plays them. How do I save these files to disk?").

comment PATH not being changed for root user
Generally, one doesn't use the root user in Mac OS X; the "Mac way" is to use sudo.
