Diereses prevent diphthongs; support diacritics awareness

--

Hi. My name is Daniel.

I'm mostly active on Ask Different, where I'm now a moderator◆, but I sometimes visit some other Stack Exchange sites (more to read than anything else).

I first got into computers in 1982, and learned to program on an Apple //+. Switched to Mac in 2003. I'm not a computer pro; it's just a hobby. I hope any of my questions or answers are helpful.

comment Is it possible to use US English keyboard layout with dead keys in Mavericks similar to those from Windows and Linux?
Great. I couldn't tell if you had a real question or if you were ranting that Apple wasn't doing dead keys "right" according to your definition of dead keys. Now I see you're actually looking for something in particular, and not just saying "they're doing it wrong." +1

Where do you get your definition of what dead keys "really" are?

comment What are some good iPad apps for students?
Questions suitable for this site have concrete answers. "What app do you recommend to solve this particular problem?" is a single question with possible concrete answers. "What are some good apps for productivity?" is a great lead into a conversation, but not a concrete question for this site. The fact that your description of what you are looking for ends in "etc." and doesn't have a closed form is a good indicator that you are asking too broad a question. Your last comment is telling: this is supposed to be a question, not the start of a thread. That's why it's closed.

See apple.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic: "Please refrain from asking about the following topics as questions with these core subjects are generally closed or deleted: Pre-release, non-publicly available beta software and software granted only under an NDA"

I haven't had any luck scripting Preview. I hope you find someone with a better answer; I'd look forward to reading it.

comment Applescript dictionary for Preview
It appears that Preview.app does not have a scripting dictionary and is thus not scriptable.

Awesome. So iMovie it is. Great to know a stock Apple app can do it.

comment Who installed this Emacs?
You want /usr/bin/emacs to invoke the default version. You can safely install your own programs in /usr/local/bin. If you want your own programs to preempt the system versions, make sure /usr/local/bin is earlier in your path than /usr/bin and /bin, but be warned that this creates a security hole if someone with admin privileges on your system installs a /usr/local/bin version of some other program with unexpected results.

Reinstalling is a solution. This is, technically, an answer.

comment Is there software that implements John Siracusa's Spatial Finder concept?
Not saddened — I love Forklift for what it is. I'd love to use it alongside a true spatial Finder. It's clear that Apple has no intention of shipping such a product, so I'm looking for a third-party Spatial Finder to complement the fine variety of File Browsers out there.
