Diereses prevent diphthongs; support diacritics awareness

--

Hi. My name is Daniel.

I'm mostly active on Ask Different, where I'm now a moderator◆, but I sometimes visit some other Stack Exchange sites (more to read than anything else).

I first got into computers in 1982, and learned to program on an Apple //+. Switched to Mac in 2003. I'm not a computer pro; it's just a hobby. I hope any of my questions or answers are helpful.

Curiouser and curiouser. No luck so far in replicating your problem, but I'll keep at it.

I had some ideas, but I haven't been able to replicate your problem yet. What OS version are you running? Does this happen with all flash drives, or just this one?

How is the drive formatted? What name are you attempting to assign to it?

comment Is there any free/paid Windows emulator for Mac OS X?
This question, as originally asked, could have been answered with a simple Google search. But there is a core question here that keeps coming up and hasn't been asked well yet. It would be a good thing to have an answer on Ask Different that explains the relative strengths of the various ways to run Windows programs on a Mac. I would encourage people to up vote, not down vote the question for that reason.

comment Software written for Mac that was later ported to Windows
I see. I'd been looking at questions that generated a lot of interest (like "What tiny thing in Lion makes you smile or has caught you off guard?") and was trying to write one that could start similar interest. If that's not what's being encouraged these days, I'm sorry to throw things off. I just thought this might be interesting and people might have fun with it. The answers I've seen so far have been informative to me.

@Ian C: Is there a way to edit this to make it a community-wiki type question then?

comment How fast does a modern Mac SuperDrive spin a CD or DVD?
Just out of curiosity, why do you want to know the answer to this (which might be a silly question for me to ask after spending absurdly long trying to figure out the answer, with no motivation myself besides the fact that you asked...)?

Your answer works for many shortcuts, but there's something strange about ⌘+⎋ in Lion.

I've also encountered problems with assigning ⌘+⎋ as a shortcut or as a hotkey within an application in Lion.

The fn key at the lower left of the keyboard by itself is invoking Mission Control?

comment Is there a QuickLook preview for plain-text files with unknown extensions?
@Chap Harrison, Yes, editing a .plist changes the code signature for an application.

comment How can I initiate a modem connection from the command line?
Of course. As I said, my approach is distinctly inelegant, but still scriptable. I'd love to see a better answer, and I suspect something involving pppd is more likely to be viable, but I have less advice to offer on that front.

A QuickLook plug-in version of HexFiend seems like the ideal unknown/default previewer, if QuickLook could be thus configured.

comment Recover docx files
What do you mean by "none of the passwords on our word documents work any longer"? Do the files now open without a password at all, or do they not open with the password you previously assigned? Have the files been modified since you assigned the password to them?
