comment Are there third-party mechanical keyboards that strictly have the Apple layout?
As for "STRICTLY" Mac layout, you can easily train your fingers to accommodate slight departures in design for a third-party keyboard. I've been using Macs since 1987 but I have not used an Apple-brand keyboard in the last twenty years. I have easily adapted to many different brands of third-party keyboard over the years.

@dwightk, the answer is "No". The low key-cap design as on modern Apple keyboards has a very short key-travel and involves a membrane technology. Clicky mechanical keys or "buckling spring" designs are by definition the older, long-throw design that goes back to the IBM keyboards of the 1970s, and feel more like the older generation electric typewriter keyboards such as the legendary IBM Selectric. Many fast touch-typists prefer this design, which I believe is the point of the original question.

What is the point of your question? If you want something completely exactly the same as an Apple keyboard, then why not simply purchase an Apple keyboard? Any third-party keyboard is not going to be a clone of Apple's keyboard; it is going to be engineered by the manufacturer to incorporate ideas that they think are better than Apple's, or perhaps less costly than Apple's design, so they will be slightly different in various ways.

comment My MacBook Air won't charge
What is the year and model number of your MacBook Air? If it is convenient, you should take it to an Apple Store to find out about the cost of battery replacement.

comment Random keyboard actions in Parallels Desktop 9
What keyboard layout are you using within Windows? What keyboard layout are you using on Mac OS X? When you install Parallels Tools on your Windows virtual machine, it installs some custom Parallels keyboard layouts for Windows. You may have inadvertently selected or toggled between different keyboard layouts in either Windows or Mac OS X, or both, and this may be confusing things.

The Apple Store Genius Bar solved my problems, as I explained in my own answer. Sorry for the frustration!

comment Unsure of how to achieve my usage scenario with a repurposed iPhone
When I put in the SIM card, the iPhone says "No Service". When I connect to a known-good WiFi, on the phone, then I get the "Try again later" message no matter what I do. I've done a couple of safe-mode resets on the iPhone and reinstallations through iTunes, to no avail.

The phone is provisioned for Sprint and locked. I bought it from a commercial reseller as used, but as near as I can tell, it is in fact brand-new and has never been used before. I got a never-before-used SIM card from a Sprint store, right out of the sealed packaging. When I brought it home to try it, I could not get it to work. In the morning I'm going to an Apple Store Genius Bar to see if they can tell me anything.

comment How to create diacritical characters with the Dvorak keyboard on Mac?
That method is useful on occasion, but it is much too slow if you are typing entirely in a language that uses a lot of diacriticals. Learning to use the "dead keys" is much faster.

So are you saying that any SIM card from the mobile provider that the phone is locked to would work to activate an iPhone as an iPod touch--that it does not have to be a SIM card taken from an iPhone belonging to someone who already has that iPhone registered for mobile service from that provider? Honestly, I have zero experience with this and I just don't understand the parameters.

@bmike, I'm afraid I just don't understand the process here, never having tried this. Please elaborate.

You must be switching keyboard layouts without knowing about it. There are shortcut keys you can disable or enable for switching layouts. Also, have you enabled the pull-down menu on the menu bar so you can select between layouts with the mouse? I think that there's also a pesky setting somewhere that changes layouts depending on what document you are editing. You need to find out how to turn that off, because it will fool you when you least expect it.

comment Thunderbolt to VGA connector makes my MacBook Pro Retina very hot
Why, in 2013, do you want to use a (poor-quality, low-resolution) VGA monitor with such a sophisticated and expensive MacBook with such high-end graphics capabilities? Would you not be better served by buying an affordable high-resolution monitor that supports DVI, DisplayPort or HDMI? You will certainly get a much better-quality image.

comment Which iPhoto folders are least useful to save space?
It does not destroy any metadata. You make the decision to keep only the cropped and edited version of the photo and to discard the original unedited version. The only question begged is: if you went to the trouble to crop and edit it carefully, why would you want to retain the original unedited version? It does just what I want it to, and I like it.
