I work in a physics lab where we do research on fusion energy and find industrial applications of high power acoustic cavitation. I write OS X software to visualize output of physics simulations and to automate calculations for spherical systems. I also write programs in Igor Pro to automate experiments, collect data, and visualize the collected data.

I have a long history (since before MIDI) in computer music. I wrote the first commercially available MIDI voice librarian for DOS. It did not make me rich.

I play around a little with OpenCV under OS X.

I used to be in a band called The Universal Steve. We put out two albums: E Pluribus Esteban and Ryer Island.

If it's a bundle, Show Package Contents will show up in the context menu. If not, it won't. You can also look at it in Terminal. A bundle's structure isn't hidden there. If it's a bundle it shows up as a directory.

comment Burning Folder to DVD
The burn folder is for situations where you want to burn more than just a single folder to disc. You create the burn folder and then copy items from various locations into the folder (where, as the original answer says, it creates links, not actual copies). If you're just wanting to burn one folder then, yes, you can simply right-click the folder you want to burn and select "burn to disc…"

comment How can I stop by External Display from switching “Spaces”
That will be addressed in OS X 10.9 Mavericks. I pretty sure it was demoed in the Keynote so I don't think I'm breaking the NDA by saying that.

comment Is it possible to change the name of a bluetooth mouse?
Thanks. Because of your answer I also discovered the "Add to Favorites" option. Hopefully that will make it so that I don't have to manually re-pair my mice each time I get to work or get home.

comment Can I restore from a Time Machine backup without booting to the Recovery HD?
I'm trying to restore an entire machine state to an external drive. I think the drive in my co-worker's MBP is beginning to fail and I'd like to try booting from the external drive.

Thanks for the answer. I gave it a try but it only wants to restore to the internal drive. I need to restore to an external drive.

Generally, anything that says "cache" is safe to delete. That's temporary storage that applications use to save time. Of course, make sure you have a current backup before deleting things you're unsure of. 42Gb for 7500 photos isn't unreasonable. That's about 5.6Mb per photo. When you edit a photo in iPhoto it keeps the original plus the modified version.

comment >console login - changing the screen size
I did less *.tex in a directory with a wide TeX file and it used the entire width of the screen. But I just tried vim and top and they do limit the width of their content. So it might be a per-application issue. I just figured out how to do it in vim. I'll update my answer. I haven't figured it out for top yet.

+1 for teaching me the '>console' trick. That's a new one on me.

comment Can I download Mountain Lion and install it later?
And you can make an install disc if you need to reinstall later or install on another machine. But you have to do it before running the installer for the first time.

comment Is there a free command line program for converting PDF files to SVG?
I did some tests with ImageMagick/convert and wasn't getting anything useful. So I did some looking around and found this page which says in bold letters: Avoid using ImageMagick for "Vector Image" to "Vector Image" conversions. Turns out it converts everything to raster format internally. So the hunt is still on…

Yes. The PDFs are vectors.

comment Change text to speech voice mac?
Just keep in mind that the file sizes for the other voices can be quite large, so only download ones you want to use and delete ones you decide not to use.

Or you could use an external HD which is cheaper than SSD and faster than SD.
