I work in a physics lab where we do research on fusion energy and find industrial applications of high power acoustic cavitation. I write OS X software to visualize output of physics simulations and to automate calculations for spherical systems. I also write programs in Igor Pro to automate experiments, collect data, and visualize the collected data.

I have a long history (since before MIDI) in computer music. I wrote the first commercially available MIDI voice librarian for DOS. It did not make me rich.

I play around a little with OpenCV under OS X.

I used to be in a band called The Universal Steve. We put out two albums: E Pluribus Esteban and Ryer Island.

comment Finder crashing on 10.6.8 (Snow Leo)
Sorry but there's nothing obvious to me. It looks like it's crashing in response to a notification and then is unable to find a class' method. But there's no telling what class that is. Some things to consider: Does it only happen in a certain folder with the installed drive? Can you list files from that drive with the ls command in Terminal? Can you connect the drive to another computer and see if it has the same problem?

Post just the part of the crash log up to the line "Binary Images". Indent all the lines four spaces if you can so that it will be displayed as code. If you can't, don't worry about it, someone will edit it.

Open the Console program and make sure "All Messages" is selected in the left column. After Finder crashes see if there are any messages from Finder in the message window. If so, add them to your question. Also, look in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and see if there are any crash reports from Finder. (To get to ~/Library, hold the Option key while selecting the Go menu from Finder.)

comment Switch Windows in Pages
You want the Zoom out shortcut to be something other than command+< so that it doesn't conflict with the system wide command+< shortcut. It my example I set the shortcut to command+back tick to illustrate that the Pages shortcut overrides the system shortcut if they're set the same.

I would consider that a bug in Pages. You should report it to Apple: apple.com/feedback/pages.html

I'm assuming a US keyboard layout, which may be a mistake on my part. What language is your keyboard?

comment How do I get the URL of a right-clicked link sent to an automator action?
I know how to make a Service. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear in my question. The problem is that I can't figure out how to invoke Safari's "Copy Link" menu item from the contextual menu. I tried assigning a keyboard shortcut to it in System Preferences but apparently that doesn't work with contextual menus.

I already have a shortcut to open the current page in Chrome, but in this case I can't open the page in Safari first because it resets the unread flags on the messages in the thread.

@grgarside ResEdit was the way we edited resources back in the pre-OS X days. dodgethesteamroller was being funny.

comment Missing “show package contents” cmd
If it's a bundle, Show Package Contents will show up in the context menu. If not, it won't. You can also look at it in Terminal. A bundle's structure isn't hidden there. If it's a bundle it shows up as a directory.

comment Burning Folder to DVD
The burn folder is for situations where you want to burn more than just a single folder to disc. You create the burn folder and then copy items from various locations into the folder (where, as the original answer says, it creates links, not actual copies). If you're just wanting to burn one folder then, yes, you can simply right-click the folder you want to burn and select "burn to disc…"

comment How can I stop by External Display from switching “Spaces”
That will be addressed in OS X 10.9 Mavericks. I pretty sure it was demoed in the Keynote so I don't think I'm breaking the NDA by saying that.

comment Is it possible to change the name of a bluetooth mouse?
Thanks. Because of your answer I also discovered the "Add to Favorites" option. Hopefully that will make it so that I don't have to manually re-pair my mice each time I get to work or get home.

comment Can I restore from a Time Machine backup without booting to the Recovery HD?
I'm trying to restore an entire machine state to an external drive. I think the drive in my co-worker's MBP is beginning to fail and I'd like to try booting from the external drive.
