comment Desktop Icons and Windows moved to odd spots after sleeping
The same thing happens to me. I'm using a TV as a monitor and I know it doesn't speak the video-monitor-protocol that is used to politely go to sleep. It just powers off and the mac thinks the screen is physically unplugged. When that happens the mac reacts by adjusting to what it thinks is a reasonable screen size. Are you using a TV for a monitor?

I had a very similar problem (possibly the same problem) and my problem went away with the 10.9.4 OS update.

Actually it does seem to be fixed (after observing for a few weeks) by 10.9.4. I updated my comment in the other thread.

comment Does anyone have any tips or best practices for using NFS mounted directories?
Do you find that there is a problem with leaving the mounts active all the time? I have a variety of servers that are used every now and then. I am worried that if they are all mounted all the time, then I will have more issues with servers not responding, and apps and utilities that walk into the filesystem in places where they don't need to be going.

comment Tips for using spotlight with webpages served via https
That would be logical, but I'd really like a way to opt in for certain domains. If anyone has a reference that says this an intentional implementation, I'll call it an RFE and close the issue.

comment Does LED Cinema Display work with non Mac systems?
Would the current Cinema display require a Dual-Link DVI connection? I have one of the last macbooks with mini-dvi, and I want to know if I can hook it up to the latest cinema display if I buy all the right adapters for it. I know the mini-dvi won't drive the 30-inch display which requires dual-link DVI, but I don't know about the 27" cinema display because it has fewer pixels.

comment How do I extract the audio signal from displayport?
Two things I'm look for are: 1) not having one extra attachment every time I move the laptop from work to home. 2) Better quality audio. I hadn't thought about your suggestion, but it gets me #2, and it's better than what I'm doing now! But I'll still buy a MDP -> MDP+Audio cable if anyone makes one.

comment Strange behaviour from delete key on a non-apple keyboard
I didn't quite parse your first sentence. "On Mac keyboards the same key and key code is used for forward delete (⌦)." Which two things are the same? As I added above, I really want the key marked 'delete' on the key cap to do the same thing that ⌘⌫ (cmd bckspc) does.

Actually, the backspace key shows a left-delete glyph (block arrow pointing left) and the delete key shows a right-delete glyph (block arrow pointing right)

I just tried the keyboard viewer, (thanks for the tip!) It shows the delete key being pushed. So at some level it's a live key.

comment What are the differences between minimizing and hiding an application?
You rock! That's an awesome answer. I've seen this question answered before, but nowhere as thoroughly as you've answered it here. Now I want to find a way to make the yellow button do a "hide" instead of a "minimize".

It says "Classic Environment" is no longer supported. Does that mean I don't have Rosetta? I thought I did. I'm running Snow Leopard.

I found another useful tip today. There is a flag in /etc/auto_master called "hidefromfinder". If you turn this off for /net and /home, it improves the interoperability between finder and the automounter.

comment Sharing music in the iTunes library with multiple accounts and iOS devices
@Dori - Did you mean summarize my "answer" starting with "When", or summarize my comment to myself starting with "This is"? I would have made the second item be a comment on the original question, but I don't have the reputation to do that.

This is a good question. It has several aspects to it, but those aspects are not obvious to people who might have this question. It makes sense to address several angles on this question in one answer. I wouldn't recommend splitting it up, or simply pointing to multiple other answers without summarizing an answer to the different aspects (file-sharing, DRM, sync-database-updating)

It also turns out that Mac OS will prompt you with a little popup when a mounted volume is no longer available. There is a button that says "unmount all", but that doesn't seem to unmount all my /net mounts. So if I mount 6 things under /net at work, then when I resume my system at home I get prompted 6 times with a few minutes in between. It's very frustrating. It would be ideal if they all showed up in finder, so I could just pull up finder and click to eject all of them at once.

I had a problem with the second suggestion. If I use "connect to server", then the directories get mounted under /Volumes. So it seems like you have to decide whether you want to use the /net paths or the /Volumes paths to access your NFS directories and then use them consistently. Otherwise it gets confusing.
