comment SD card slot is always read-only
This sounds more like superstition than like an actual explanation. A card reader acting on NAND Flash storage needs much, much less power than an actual hard drive. My laptop was connected at all times when I had this problem.

comment Why are my crash logs disappearing?
The help for Onyx states that the built-in daily maintenance script will delete crash reports older than some date. All the maintenance features of Onyx are about running scheduled maintenance right away, not configuring how it happens, from what I can see. I'm not sure that this is configurable from Onyx.

comment Why are my crash logs disappearing?
I do remember using Onyx on my older Mac and I did carry over the 2009 version of it to this MacBook Pro. I've downloaded the latest version, and there are options to clear crash and diagnostic logs and it seems to say that it's part of normal maintenance.
